Cropking Gutter-Connect Greenhouse
Basic structure: Greenhouse consists of 11 bays, each 22’ by 128’, for a total of 31,000 sq. ft. The north wall is insulated wood construction; the south wall has polycarbonate sheeting; the sidewalls and roof are double 4 mil poly with inflation fans. The greenhouse was built in three stages: The 1st 4 bays were built 1995. The 2nd four bays in 1999, along with the sawdust burning heat plant. The final 3 bays were built in 2001. The 1st four bays were built with sidewalks and gutters, the remaining seven bays are on a flat slab of concrete. Entire greenhouse floor is cement.The greenhouse is currently set up for growing tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, with a capability of 7656 plants total, all grown hydroponically. Plants are grown in “Bato Buckets” with perlite. “Tomahooks” and cables are used to support the plants. We also grow lettuce, broccoli, herbs and other plants.
Fans and Cooling: The entire greenhouse is environmentally controlled via a Grower’s Choice computer. There are 22-36” cooling fans, and 11-24” jet fans. Four bays also have horizontal airflow fans. (Four fans per bay, for a total of 16 fans, 1/3 h.p. each.) There is an evaporative cooling pad and vent door that run the full length of south end of greenhouse. All controlled by Grower’s Choice computer.
Heat: All heat comes from hot water supplied from heat plant. Each bay has a 200,000+ BTU radiator for heating the air, and in-floor tubing for heating the concrete. All hot water for other purposes (plant feeding, cleaning, mixing fertilizer,) is also heated from the heat plant. There are also four back-up 200,000 BTU Modine heaters in the original four bays, and a 500,000 BTU boiler. All run on natural gas, and are not needed for day-to-day operations (back-up only,) but all work.
Feed System: The feed system consists of a Gorman-Rupp injector pump, a mixing tank, a two horsepower high volume pump, Netafim emitters, and a separate Growers Choice to run it all. Also included is a separate back-up feed system. Drainage is collected in a tank at the end of the greenhouse for use on field crops in summer.
Electrical: There is a 400 amp single phase service to the greenhouse. This service also provides power to the heat plant and house. A back-up diesel generator is also included, that is maintained in working order, and is periodically tested.
Heat Plant
The heat plant was constructed in 1999, and is key to the sustainability of the operation. The heat plant consists
of two connected buildings. The first is 24’Wx32’Lx22’H, and is a sawdust storage bin for the boiler. The second
building is 36’Wx60’Lx14’H, and houses the boiler.
The Messersmith boiler system heats all buildings on the premises. It uses a 106 hp Burnham boiler and is run with
an OCS computer. All operations are fully automatic. The computer is also equipped with an alarm function that alerts
owners of malfunction via phone and alarm horn.
The boiler takes up less than 1/5 of the boiler building. The remaining 4/5+ is for storage, workshop, etc. The
possibilities for this building are practically limitless.
Sorting building
The sorting building was built in two phases. The original sorting building was constructed in 1997, and measures
26’x 48’, with a 4’ overhanging roof in front. It has a hot water heater as back-up heat, but is heated by the heat
plant, through hydronic tubes in the cement slab floor. It is presently used for storage and has a small restroom
for employees. In 2001, after the purchase of a Greefa sorting machine (included,) the 32’x 48’ addition was built
on. This section is now used for sorting and storage of produce and has a cooling system.
House
The house is a spacious five bedroom home of 4362 sq ft. It was built in 2002. The lower level has open planning
with 9’ ceilings, country kitchen/ living room and a gas fireplace. Also on lower level are an office, laundry/ mud
room, powder room, and master bedroom and bath with Jacuzzi. There is a 982 sq. ft. attached three car garage.
Both levels of the house are heated by in-floor heat w/ tubes in the floor. It is heated by the heat plant, but
the house also has a back-up Weil-McLain boiler.
There is a two story open foyer. Upstairs are four bedrooms, two full baths, and a large recreational room over the
garage. Each bedroom has spacious closets. There is a sound system throughout the house, with speakers in the ceiling.
In addition, there is a central vacuum system, and central air throughout the house. Flooring throughout the house
is ceramic tile and carpet.
